Tucsonan Finn does it again!!

Wow!! what a Finn

Wow!! what a Finn

Gary Panttila at the Powerlifting State Championships in Tombstone, AZ came in first in the 242lb class. This was his 10th straight state championship in 5 years. He now has the state record in each weight class (181, 198, 220, and 242). He will be competing in December 2009 for the World Championship with the USA Powerlifting Team in Las Vegas. He is the only lifter going from AZ. He wishes to share his appreciation to the Northwest YMCA for allowing him to use the facility for training and to the members (Shannon St) who give him support on a daily basis. He also dedicated this last win to his mother Shelley, who celebrated her 54th birthday the day of the state meet. And to his workout partner Danni
Eldridge who is one of the greatest female powerlifters
ever. Strong words, Gary.
“Kiitoksia kaikille, jotka auttoivat ja kannustivat, minua
treenin aikana ja kilpailuissa!”

Movie October 17, 2009

Aavan Meren Tällä Puolen

An endearing and disarmingly beautiful little gem - a particularly authentic coming-of age masterpiece set in the 80’s Scandinavia.  Kirsi, a Swedish girl of Finnish minority, has won a reporter contest for Radio Gothenburg. Her mother decides to spend the summer in her homeland Finland despite Kirsi’s objections. Great cinematography, acting and acting!  English Subtitles.

Speaking Finnish! Finnish Language Camp

Marissa, age 14, was awarded a partial scholarship by our club to attend the Salolampi Finnish Language Camp Summer 2008.  She wrote the following:

“In Bemidji, MN, there are language camps sponsored by the Concordia College.  I attended the Finnish Language Camp for a week.  Going to Salolampi was the coolest experience I have had!  Starting with flying alone without my mother and eating all my meals where only Finnish was spoken — was amazing.

I got to experience being ’submerged’ into a Finnish world.  We would go to language classes all morning where I actually was able to understand and speak quite a bit Finnish.  We sang songs in Finnish, went to a dance, went to arts & crafts where Finnish was also spoken, and we got to buy things with euros.

I spent Juhannus (Midsummer) with an actual bonfire by the lake where it was cold, instead of 100 degrees as in Tucson.

All of this made a difference in how I think about being Finnish.  I hope to return to camp next summer and to learn to speak Finnish fluently.”
